Am I a Candidate for Liposuction?

3 Minute Read:

Are you unhappy with the appearance of a body area due to excess fat deposits that don’t respond to exercise or diet?

If so, you are not alone.

Fortunately, liposuction can safely and effectively remove stubborn fat, leaving you with a sleeker, slimmer, and more youthful appearance.

While this popular body contouring treatment works for most people, it’s important to note the primary factors that make a person an ideal candidate.

Good Health

As with any surgical procedure, good health is critical. Conditions such as heart disease, circulatory problems, and lung disease present higher risks for complications.

During your consultation, Dr. Karlinsky or Dr. Kim will review your medical history and determine if you are healthy enough to qualify for liposuction.

Realistic Expectations About Surgery

While liposuction sculpts certain body areas to provide substantial improvements, it is rare for the results to be perfect. Additionally, this surgery is not a weight-loss procedure; it is a body sculpting surgery.

Having reasonable expectations will come from learning more about the procedure and what it can do for your specific concerns.

Ideal Weight

Since liposuction only removes a few pounds of fat, you want to be close to your ideal weight.

Good Skin Elasticity

Patients with good skin elasticity usually attain better results. This is because liposuction does not remove or tighten excess skin.

When the skin is elastic and firm, it easily conforms to the newly improved contours.

Who Isn’t a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

If you are overweight or obese, you may want to get closer to your target weight before considering liposuction surgery. Liposuction is most effective for people at or near their ideal weight. The general recommendation is not to be over 20 pounds overweight.

Having a stable weight allows your surgeon to identify the regions that would better benefit from the procedure for the best outcome.

Further, patients with poor skin elasticity get unsatisfactory results with liposuction alone. Having sagging skin may leave you with a slightly wrinkled appearance that takes away from your beautifully sculpted contour.

Fortunately, many patients with poor skin elasticity get amazing results when liposuction is performed in conjunction with necessary skin tightening treatments, such as tummy tuck surgery or body lift surgery.

Smoking also has a significant role to play when it comes to recovery. Individuals are advised to halt smoking behaviors for several months before and after surgery as smoking delays the healing process, leading to unsuccessful outcomes.

So, Is Liposuction Right for You or Not?

Ultimately, only an in-person consultation with a qualified board-certified cosmetic surgeon like Dr. Karlinsky or Dr. Kim can determine your candidacy. A good surgeon will always ensure you only undergo procedures that are right for you and your goals.

Liposuction in Westchester, New York

Westchester, NY woman shows liposuction results
Many men and women struggle to slim and tone their overall figure, particularly after significant weight loss or pregnancy. Liposuction is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries in the country and is a safe and effective way to lose that stubborn fat. Our board-certified cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Victoria Karlinsky, can help you achieve your ideal body shape.

If you’re interested in liposuction or another cosmetic procedure, please contact Dr. Karlinsky in Westchester today at (646) 559-2854 to schedule your consultation. Westchester Cosmetic Surgical Arts serves patients in surrounding areas of New York.

While liposuction is in the top three most popular cosmetic surgeries, there are many aspects you should know about lipo, the procedure, and recovery, including:

What is Liposuction?

Lipo is not a weight loss operation or solution to diet and exercise. It is a body contouring procedure customized to your aesthetic goals. Liposuction is a surgical way to remove unwanted fat to slim and reshape specific body areas and provide a proportionate, contoured figure.

Dr. Karlinsky is a highly-skilled cosmetic surgeon who offers fat reduction in multiple areas with liposuction including:

  • Chin, neck, and face
  • Arms
  • Abdomen and “love handles”
  • Back
  • Buttocks
  • Thighs
  • Calves
  • Ankles

Liposuction can be paired with other procedures such as breast surgery or the Brazilian Butt Lift. The fat removed during the lipo procedure is re-introduced into the breasts or buttocks to reshape and “lift” the area. For our New York clients looking for minimal fat reduction, Dr. Karlinsky also offers Tickle Lipo, or “Lunchtime Lipo,” which requires less time and recovery than traditional liposuction.

The fat cells removed during liposuction will not grow back in the treated areas, which makes this procedure a great solution to stubborn fat that just won’t go away with diet and exercise. While the fat that is removed is gone for good, you can still gain weight in untreated areas. Lipo is a fat-removal technique only and can’t address cellulite or excess skin.

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) combined with liposuction can eliminate loose skin if you struggle with sagging skin after pregnancy or weight loss. A Mommy Makeover is another combination procedure that involves liposuction, abdominoplasty, and breast surgery to restore your body shape and confidence after having children.

Who is a Candidate for Liposuction?

Most people with areas of unwanted fat qualify for liposuction, but it’s important to have realistic expectations for what we can accomplish with this cosmetic surgery. The ideal liposuction candidate is within 10-15 pounds of his or her goal weight and in good overall health. If you’re a smoker, you will need to quit prior to your liposuction through recovery. Some medications may need to be discontinued. As with any invasive procedure, there are potential risks such as infection and bleeding, fluid collection, and skin irregularities. Dr. Karlinsky will discuss your options, details of the procedure, and any risks during your consultation.

The Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction surgery takes 60-90 minutes from start to finish for most of our patients. If you choose to target multiple body areas at once with liposuction, your session time will be longer. During the lipo procedure, Dr. Karlinsky uses tumescent anesthesia—A numbing agent made up of salt water, lidocaine, and epinephrine (adrenaline)—to constrict the small blood vessels in the fat and reduce blood loss. This makes for a faster recovery and less painful procedure. Many of Dr. Karlinsky’s patients report feeling mild discomfort and a vibrating or tickling sensation in the treated body part as she reshapes the problem areas.

However, patients looking for significant fat removal will need to go under general anesthesia so your liposuction treatment will take place at our Manhattan surgical center. Westchester Cosmetic Surgical Arts provides transportation to and from our Manhattan office so you can focus on preparing and recovering from liposuction. Both forms of liposuction are outpatient procedures, so there’s no overnight stay required, but you will need to have someone available to drive you home and help you get settled.

What to Expect During Liposuction Recovery

Infographic explains liposuction recovery at Westchester Cosmetic Surgical Arts You’ll likely feel mild to moderate pain following liposuction, and you may be sore for several weeks, but most patients go back to work within two or three days. If your profession involves heavy lifting or labor, Dr. Karlinsky may recommend taking a week away to allow your body to heal correctly. There will be a surgical garment which you need to wear for three weeks full time and another three weeks part-time. This helps your skin heal and provides a pain management benefit as well.

You’ll come into Westchester Cosmetic Surgical Arts for a follow-up appointment 24 hours after your cosmetic surgery to monitor how you’re doing and identify any issues immediately. Dr. Karlinsky gives her personal phone number to patients to maintain communication as complications can often be avoided when we’re both staying on top of your liposuction recovery. There’s another follow-up visit after one week and at three months, which is when Dr. Karlinsky will take your after photos.

There are a few ways you can prepare yourself and your home for liposuction recovery such as making and freezing nutritious meals ahead of time and creating a cozy area in the living room or bedroom where you can rest. Ask a friend or family member to drive you home the day of surgery and stay with you for the first day or so. If you have children, arrange for more help around the house so you can focus on healing and avoid putting too much strain on your body.

What is Tickle Lipo and Lunchtime Lipo?

Men and women who have small areas of unwanted fat may qualify to have Tickle Lipo. Dr. Karlinsky has coined the term “Lunchtime Lipo” because liposuction treatments with local, tumescent anesthesia can often be done over your lunch break at our Westchester location and you can return to work afterward. The Tickle Lipo is a cold lipo, not a laser, so there’s no risk of burn. The cannula used by our cosmetic surgeon moves up, down, and sideways quickly, creating vibrations that may tickle and allow it to move through the tissues easily. That causes less trauma and leads to less blood loss and pain during recovery.

Lunchtime Lipo is best for those who have localized areas of stubborn fat. You’ll need to avoid running and lifting heavy objects for one week, but most Tickle Lipo patients can return to normal activities after that. This liposuction option allows you to achieve your ideal figure on your lunch break without having to miss work.

What to Expect During Tickle Lipo Recovery

Recovery from Tickle Lipo is less extensive than traditional liposuction because it’s done over your lunch break and you can return to work. The procedure takes between one and two hours depending on the treated area(s), but there are no stitches required, just a band-aid and the incision site usually heals within 48 hours. You’ll still need to wear a surgical garment for one week full time and one week part time and stay in contact with Dr. Karlinsky about your progress.

Body Procedures

Men and women should feel confident and sexy at any age, but maintaining your figure becomes more and more difficult as you get older. Body procedures, or body contouring, have helped many of our Westchester patients restore their confidence and shape by eliminating stubborn fat and getting rid of loose skin that’s developed with age or after pregnancy and weight loss. Our board-certified cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Karlinsky-Bellini, offers a variety of cosmetic surgeries aimed to give you a body shape you’re proud to see in the mirror.

If you’re interested in one or more body procedures, please contact Westchester Cosmetic Surgical Arts today at (646) 559-2854 to schedule your consultation. We serve patients in surrounding areas of New York.

Liposuction

Lipo can get rid of unwanted fat in nearly every area of the body from your cheeks to your ankles. This fat removal procedure is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries in the United States, and you have more liposuction options than you may realize. Dr. Karlinsky-Bellini will personalize your liposuction procedure to fit your aesthetic goals. The surgery typically takes 60-90 minutes to complete and is an outpatient procedure. We also offer TickleLipo, or Lunchtime Lipo.  Learn more about Liposuction.

Tummy Tuck & Mini-Tummy Tuck

Dr. Karlinsky-Bellini performs the traditional abdominoplasty and the mini-abdominoplasty to deliver a flatter, smoother contour. The full tummy tuck focuses on both the upper and lower abdomen, getting rid of excess skin, tightening abdominal muscles, and eliminating extra fat that’s been resistant to diet and exercise. The mini-tummy tuck is excellent for women who have lost weight or given birth and are mainly concerned about the lower abdomen. Mini-abdominoplasties require less downtime and have a smaller incision than the standard tummy tuck. Dr. Karlinsky-Bellini will remove excess skin and fat from your stomach area while leaving your navel (belly button) intact for natural-looking mini-tummy tuck results. Learn more about Tummy Tuck.

Body Lift

Losing a large amount of weight can help you restore good health and achieve a thinner figure, but it does come with its own set of challenges, including loose skin all over your frame. The body lift addresses excess skin tissue and fat and is an especially useful procedure for patients who have had bariatric or gastric bypass surgery. The full body lift involves removing that loose tissue from several areas of your body, which means Dr. Karlinsky-Bellini will likely perform the upper and lower body lifts as separate procedures for optimal results and safety.

This comprehensive procedure includes several body contouring surgeries. The lower body lift can involve a tummy tuck, thigh lift, and butt lift while the upper body lift can consist of a breast lift, arm lift, and back lift. Dr. Karlinsky-Bellini will make as few incisions as possible to give you a body shape that looks natural and give you a tighter, toned appearance. The full body lift is the only body procedure that requires an overnight stay. All others are performed on an outpatient basis. Learn more about Body Lift.

Brazilian Butt Lift

The Brazilian Butt Lift is a minimally-invasive procedure that uses unwanted fat from another area of your body such as the dreaded “love handles,” thighs, or hips and re-introduces it into your buttocks to provide a fuller, lifted contour. The BBL not only offers a shapelier backside but the added benefit of liposuction. The Brazilian Butt Lift typically takes two to four hours to perform and is less invasive than a buttock implant procedure. The recovery is shorter, but you will need to stay vigilant and avoid putting pressure on your buttocks during the healing process to ensure maximum fat survival. Learn more about Brazilian Butt Lift

Arm Lift

The upper arm area is a problematic part of the body to tone as few exercises effectively target the “arm flab.” An arm lift, or brachioplasty, contours the upper arm by removing stubborn fat and excising excess skin tissue. The procedure begins with an incision stretching from the underside of your arm from elbow to armpit. Dr. Karlinsky-Bellini may utilize liposuction to provide the best arm lift results. The arm lift takes two to three hours, and you’ll notice a difference immediately—Though your full results will set in once you’ve healed. Learn more about Arm Lift

Thigh Lift

Droopy, loose skin around the thighs and knees can be eliminated with a thigh lift procedure performed by Dr. Karlinsky-Bellini to deliver a slim and sexy lower body shape. Our cosmetic surgeon will customize your thigh lift and based on your body and aesthetic goals will perform a medial thigh lift with an incision in the groin area or a vertical thigh lift with a vertical incision starting at the groin area and extending downward. Thigh lift results vary as each procedure is unique, and you’ll enjoy your new figure for years to come if you live a healthy and active lifestyle. Learn more about Thigh Lift

Mommy Makeover

Becoming a parent can have a beautiful impact on your lives; however, this can not always be said about your body post-pregnancy. Mommy Makeover procedures offer mothers a specialized body contouring procedure that helps reverse the effects of fluctuating weight, shape, and size caused by pregnancy. A Mommy Makeover is a comprehensive treatment plan that includes a combination of rejuvenating surgeries. Your board-certified cosmetic surgeon will tailor your Mommy Makeover to your aesthetic goals, applying targeted liposuction, abdominoplasty, and breast enhancement to the chest when needed. If applicable to a patient’s needs, additional procedures may be included, such as arm or thigh lifts. Patients can enjoy a fully balanced and natural-looking contour to their entire body for years to come. Learn more about Mommy Makeover surgery
