When Is the Right Time to Get a Nose Job?

If you’ve spent hours looking in the mirror and examining your nose from every angle or insist that every photo you’re in must showcase your “good side,” you may have thought about getting a nose job.

But with your busy schedule and nonstop activity, when is the best time of year to get rhinoplasty? And what about your age — are you too young or too old to make a change?

Below, we explore these topics to help you determine the best time to get a nose job.

What Is the Best Age to Get a Nose Job?

For many teens, the size or shape of their nose may be a source of embarrassment. For others, issues with their breathing caused by a deviated septum or other nasal problems may be something compelling them to choose surgery.

While there’s technically no age limit for rhinoplasty, the main criteria are that your nose must be fully formed and done growing. Girls’ noses stop growing around age 15 or 16, while boys’ noses are done growing around age 17 or 18.

To that end, teens between the ages of 13 and 19 make up about 13% of the rhinoplasties performed in 2020.

The age group with the highest percentage of rhinoplasties is those ages 20 to 29, with nearly 110,000 nose-reshaping surgeries performed in 2020.

Some of the reasons this number is the highest include:

  • They’re entering the workforce and want to feel more confident in their appearance
  • They want to repair a deviated septum or cosmetic defect due to a childhood injury
  • The increase in selfies and social media posts with pictures
  • The influence of celebrities and media
  • The decrease in the stigma around getting plastic surgery

While none of these are scientifically proven, something is driving the desire for rhinoplasty, as it is the number one most requested cosmetic surgery procedure for both men and women.

When Is the Best Time of Year to Get a Nose Job?

Men and women undergo rhinoplasty during all seasons. While there are no “preferred” seasons for nose surgery, there are some things to remember to determine the right time for your lifestyle and needs.

Summer

Some surgeons believe that the summer is the best time to undergo a rhinoplasty, especially for patients in their late teens who are about to embark on their college journey. Starting a new phase of your life with a fresh look is a great way to boost self-esteem.

Additionally, most of the people you meet won’t have known you before, so you’ll have fewer questions to answer about whether or not you had surgery.

On the other hand, summer can be less than optimal for rhinoplasty. You’ll have to spend a couple of weeks recuperating at home as the bruising and initial swelling decrease.

Once you’re able to go back to your regular activities, there are still several restrictions in place, at least for the first couple of weeks:

  • You can’t wear sunglasses because your nose is still very delicate and sensitive.
  • Swimming in pools is out because chlorinated water can cause further swelling. Swimming in lakes is also not optimal because of the potential for bacteria.
  • It’s essential to stay out of the sun, as it can cause irritation, sun damage, and even darken any incision scars you may have.
  • Vigorous or strenuous exercise is not recommended, as it can cause pain and swelling.

Winter

There are also several advantages if you’re considering a rhinoplasty during winter. Because people are more likely to stay indoors during the colder months, it’s not unusual for you to hibernate while recovering from your procedure.

Cooler temperatures also mean wearing layers, so no one will question if you need to cover up with a scarf. Winter is also a good time for a rhinoplasty because there’s often a natural lull in activity after the holidays, so taking time off is a bit easier.

However, just as summer rhinoplasty has disadvantages, so does undergoing a nose job in the winter. The increase in seasonal colds and other sinus-related illnesses can be an issue after rhinoplasty, as sneezing, coughing, or congestion may cause a pressure buildup in the delicate tissues of your nose, resulting in bleeding.

Additionally, the air in your home may be drier due to more frequent use of your heater, causing the tissues in your nose to dry out. Humidifiers and saline sprays can help keep your nasal passages moist as you heal.

Spring and fall tend to bring increased allergens in the air, which could complicate your recovery. Just as with winter colds, the potential for sneezing or coughing from allergies can have an adverse effect on your healing process.

Fat Grafting in Westchester, NY

Even if you keep up with a proper diet and frequent exercise, you may notice your age starting to show on your face and body. Harsh lines and wrinkles make you appear older than you feel. Many of us want to change specific parts of our bodies, and luckily, fat grafting lets you do just that. That is why more and more people are turning to fat grafting to give themselves the perfect, youthful appearance they crave.

Fat grafting, also known as fat transfer, is the process of harvesting fat cells from one part of the body and transferring them to another area to add volume. It is very popular for facial rejuvenation (filling in wrinkles and lines) but is also used for buttock and breast augmentation.

The board-certified cosmetic surgeons at Westchester Cosmetic Surgical Arts offer fat grafting for women and men in Westchester, New York, and the surrounding areas.

Am I a Candidate for Fat Grafting?

Fat grafting is a popular procedure among both men and women. Facial fat grafting can add natural fullness to the face, eliminate lines and wrinkles, and even reduce facial scarring. With fat grafting to the body, it can add volume to areas that are sagging or small.

The risks of a fat grafting procedure are minimal since the injections consist of your fat. However, you will need to schedule a consultation with one of our cosmetic surgeons at Westchester Cosmetic Surgical Arts to ensure that fat grafting is the right choice for you. Your surgeon will discuss your goals and recommend the best procedures for you. They will also identify if you have any existing conditions that can interfere with the procedure.

Candidates should not smoke, be in good overall health, and have realistic expectations for their results.

How Is Fat Grafting Performed?

Fat grafting is minimally invasive, requiring only topical and local anesthetics at the fat retrieval and injection sites. Your surgeon will harvest fat from your selected body area, usually the abdomen before it is purified and injected into its new location.

It is always essential to undergo your fat grafting with an experienced surgeon, as technical skill is necessary for smooth contours and optimal results.

What Should I Expect From My Fat Grafting Recovery?

A typical fat grafting process takes between one and two hours. The recovery time is minimal, with some patients reporting feeling discomfort in the areas where the fat was removed and inserted. This discomfort can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications.

There may be some swelling and bruising, but this usually only lasts up to a week.

What Results Can I Expect From Fat Grafting?

Thanks to many technological advancements, the results in fat grafting are much more successful today than when the procedure was first introduced in the mid-1990s.

Results will vary from patient to patient, but most individuals walk away with results that last several years. Results from fat grafting also vary depending on the body area. Touch-ups are available for patients who desire additional fullness.

Lip Augmentation in Westchester, NY

Every woman strives for full, shapely lips, but, unfortunately, few are born with them. Luckily, lip augmentation is a popular, non-surgical or minimally invasive procedure that can turn thin lips into luscious ones with dermal fillers or facial fat transfer. Dermal fillers require no recovery time and provide instant results. Fat transfer is slightly more extensive but offers longer-lasting enhancement. Women can choose the amount of desired lip augmentation, ranging from minimal fullness to a more dramatic pout.

Our board-certified cosmetic surgeons offer lip augmentation and other forms of facial cosmetic surgery for patients in Westchester, New York, and the surrounding areas.

Am I a Candidate for Lip Augmentation?

Lip augmentation is chosen by women who:
  • Have naturally thin lips
  • Have experienced a thinning of their lips with age
  • Want cosmetic improvements without lip implants

Most women are amazed at how much of a difference plumping their lips can make on the entire face. Luscious lips give your face a more youthful look while still appearing natural.

Lip augmentation may be appropriate for anyone over the age of 18 who would like to see an improvement in their face or lips. Candidates should be in good overall health and have realistic expectations of their results.

How Is Lip Augmentation Performed?

Lip augmentation is the plumping or reshaping of lips through injectable dermal fillers or facial fat transfer.

Lip Augmentation With Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are non-surgical injectables that use compounds of naturally occurring chemicals found in the body to restore fullness and shape. These injections are placed throughout the upper and lower lip, depending on your needs and desired level of enhancement.

Dermal filler injections are not permanent, and if you are not pleased with the results, your lips will return to normal after a short period. There are minimal risks with lip augmentation, with bleeding, infection, or uneven lips being rare. That being said, certain conditions or allergies make some individuals ineligible for this treatment.

Lip augmentation with dermal fillers often takes less than 15 minutes.

Lip Augmentation With Fat Transfer

Much like dermal fillers, facial fat transfer is an injection that restores fullness and shape. Here, fat is taken from an area of excess on the body, purified, and injected into the lips. Since this fat is natural to you, there is hardly any risk of rejection or allergic reaction.

What Is Lip Augmentation Recovery Like?

Many women love lip augmentation as it calls for virtually no recovery time. With dermal fillers, you can make an appointment during your lunch break and go straight back to work after. You may experience some slight tenderness, but this can be handled with over-the-counter pain medication. Some patients experience bruising or swelling, but this will disappear after a few days. Patients who choose lip augmentation with a facial fat transfer may require some downtime as the transferring material is taken from your body. Our surgeons will inform you about your expected recovery timeline during your consultation.

The results of lip augmentation are instant. You will leave the office with visibly fuller lips.

What Results Can I Expect From Lip Augmentation?

Many women are scared that they will have “duck lips,” and it will be evident that they have had work done. However, this should never be the case. Our surgeons will start you off with a small plump, offering a very natural look. You will only go up in volume as you feel comfortable.

Patients can expect to see results for up to one year with dermal fillers and longer for facial fat transfer (as the body does not absorb fat as readily). Repeated lip augmentation treatments can be performed as needed.

Neck Lift in Westchester, NY

Many people meticulously care for the skin on their face but forget to pay attention to their neckline—and the skin on the neck ages at the same rate as the tissues on your face. Neck lift surgery, or lower rhytidectomy, improves signs of aging along the jawline and neck.

The board-certified cosmetic surgeons at Westchester Cosmetic Surgical Arts offer a wide array of facial enhancement procedures for men and women in Westchester and the surrounding areas.

Am I a Candidate for a Neck Lift?

Neck lift surgery helps provide a slimming, natural look that takes years off the appearance of your neck and jawline. If you are in good health and want to remove excess neck skin and fat (such as vertical banding or a double chin), you might be a good candidate for neck lift surgery. Many clients choose neck lift surgery to smooth out wrinkles and attain a more youthful look.

How Is Neck Lift Surgery Performed?

Neck lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia at our Westchester surgical center. With our experienced board-certified cosmetic surgeons, you can achieve perceptible improvements and natural results.

Incisions are made behind the ears to tighten your neck tissues and help eliminate sagging skin and vertical banding. An additional incision is made below the chin to allow for liposuction of a double chin. Typically, the procedure takes between two and three hours.

Some patients choose to combine their neck lift surgery with facelift surgery or a mini-facelift to optimize their results and restore balance and harmony between the facial features.

What Is My Neck Lift Recovery Like?

Generally, neck lift surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning you can go home on the same day as your treatment. Because neck lift surgery requires anesthesia, you will need to arrange for someone to drive you to and from the procedure and stay with you for the first 24 hours.

It is best to rest at home and ask for help with everyday tasks during the initial stage of your recovery. Most neck lift patients can return to work and their normal day-to-day activities within one week to 10 days; however, we recommend waiting at least two weeks before returning to major physical activity.

For best results, rest with your head elevated to reduce swelling and quicken the healing process.

What Results Can I Expect From a Neck Lift?

You will start to notice the changes in your neck and jawline immediately following the surgery, which will continue to improve as the bruising and swelling subside. Performed by our skillful surgeons, your neck lift could show results for 10 to 15 years. While neck lift surgery cannot stop the aging process, it can rewind the clock several years and restore enhanced youthfulness.

Whether you want to have neck lift surgery alone or in combination with other anti-aging procedures, the skilled surgeons at Westchester Cosmetic Surgical Arts are here to help you get the best results possible.

Ear Surgery in Westchester, NY

If you or your child have protruding, uneven ears that stick out, you may feel self-conscious about your appearance or concerned about what your child’s ears may do to their self-esteem. Cosmetic ear surgery, also known as ear pinning or otoplasty, is a surgical procedure that repositions protruding ears closer to the head or resizes overly large ears.

Am I a Candidate for Ear Surgery?

As with all types of cosmetic surgery, ear pinning candidates should be healthy and have no medical conditions that can impact their ability to heal.

Ear surgery is one of the few cosmetic surgeries that can be safely performed on children, and all patients should fully understand the outcomes and risks of the procedure, regardless of age. Candidates for ear surgery should have fully developed ears, which usually occurs around the age of five or six.

How Is Ear Surgery Performed?

Ear surgery is performed on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia, although a local anesthetic combined with a mild sedative may be an option. The specific surgical technique used varies depending on the needs of the patient and the preferences of the cosmetic surgeon.

For many patients, a small incision will be made behind the ear where the ear connects to the head. If the patient wishes to reduce the overall size of their ears or balance asymmetrical ears, excess ear cartilage and tissue may be removed to create a smaller, more proportionate shape.

Stitches can be used to pin the ear cartilage to the head, ensuring that it will heal into the desired position.

What Is Ear Surgery Recovery Like?

Following ear surgery at our Westchester, New York, surgical facility, patients should expect to stay home from work or school for about one week. Any post-surgical discomfort can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications.

While bed rest is not needed or recommended, patients should minimize their movements and refrain from activities that could strain the sutures and interfere with healing. The surgical site should be kept clean and dry, and patients may need to refrain from their usual hair care routine for a short period.

What Results Can I Expect From Ear Surgery?

Ear surgery is exceptionally safe and effective, and the vast majority of patients are thrilled with the outcome. There may be slight scarring at the surgical site; however, any scarring is completely concealed behind the ear.

If otoplasty is performed before the patient reaches adulthood, there is a slight chance that revision surgery may be needed at some point to correct natural changes in the ear shape and orientation. Revisions are rarely required for adult ear surgery patients.

Adult ear surgery patients may choose to combine their ear surgery with an additional facial rejuvenation procedure, such as facelift surgery.

Mini-Facelift in Westchester, NY

Developing loose, tired skin is a part of the aging process; however, certain lifestyle choices and sun damage can contribute to this. While cosmetic products can improve the condition of your skin, they cannot address deep creases and facial lines. A mini-facelift corrects minor aging problems, such as laxity in the lower face, jowls, and upper neck, without an extended recovery time.

Am I a Candidate for a Mini-Facelift?

A mini-facelift treats sagging jowls and excess skin around your lower face. Candidates for mini-facelift surgery do not smoke, are in good health, and have realistic expectations of their results.

Most mini-facelift candidates are between the ages of 40 and 50; however, some candidates are younger than that while others are older. Candidacy is determined by the extent of your skin laxity and other facial concerns.

If you have significant laxity and jowls, a full facelift may be more appropriate. Additionally, you may be a candidate for eyelid surgery or brow lift surgery if you have additional signs of aging on the upper face.

How Is the Mini-Facelift Performed?

A mini-facelift tightens your facial skin and muscles, providing youthful smoothness while maintaining your natural appearance. The mini-facelift is not as invasive as full facelift surgery and can be completed under local anesthesia. The procedure can take between two and three hours to perform.

While the incision placement for a mini-facelift is similar to the traditional facelift, these incisions are much smaller.

For many patients, this procedure enables them to address problem areas without drastic changes and major surgery.

What Is Mini-Facelift Recovery Like?

The mini-facelift is an outpatient procedure, and you can return home shortly after your procedure to recover.

While this procedure is less invasive than a full facelift, the skin and facial muscles are still being tightened, and it is likely to develop bruising, swelling, tenderness, and soreness.

Over-the-counter pain medication should alleviate any discomfort, but you will be recommended to schedule one week off work to give yourself adequate time to heal.

What Results Can I Expect From Mini-Facelift?

You will notice the results of your mini-facelift immediately after your surgery, which will continue to improve as the bruising and swelling subside.

A mini-facelift improves the aesthetics of your face by tightening the jawline, cheeks, and neck. Contemporary facelift surgery increases the smoothness and tightness of your skin without leaving your skin looking overstretched, and most patients remain pleased with their mini-facelift results for years to come.

This procedure does not stop the natural aging process; however, you can extend the quality of your results by protecting your skin from the sun, following a healthy lifestyle, and keeping your skin hydrated.

The Top 5 Cosmetic Surgeries in 2018

Cosmetic surgery patient with surgical lines on her face in Westchester, NY.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recently released the 2018 statistics for cosmetic procedures in the United States, which totals 17.7 million. Minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures such as dermal fillers and chemical peels make up the bulk of that number with 15.9 million treatments in 2018, with the remaining 1.8 million being cosmetic surgical procedures. The top five cosmetic surgeries in 2018 include:

1. Breast Augmentation

There were 313,735 breast augmentation procedures in 2018. This cosmetic surgery enhances breast size with saline or silicone breast implants or the newer, fat transfer method that utilizes fat from another area of your body. Women often choose breast augmentation to correct congenital conditions such as breast asymmetry and tuberous breasts or to increase their self-esteem and body confidence.

2. Liposuction

Lipo can contour nearly every area of your body from addressing a double chin to getting rid of the dreaded “love handles.” Liposuction can also be utilized for male breast reduction to address gynecomastia (enlarged male breasts) as well as collecting fat deposits for the Brazilian Butt Lift and fat transfer breast augmentation. At Westchester Surgical Arts, we offer traditional liposuction, Lunchtime Lipo, and Tickle Lipo. There were 258,558 liposuction procedures in 2018.

3. Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)

Commonly referred to as a “nose job,” the rhinoplasty surgically alters the size and/or shape of the nose for medical or cosmetic reasons. This includes narrowing or widening the nostrils, addressing a bump on the bridge of the nose, and correcting a crooked nose. The rhinoplasty procedure can involve altering the bone in the upper portion of the nose, cartilage, and/or skin tissue. There were 213,780 rhinoplasties in 2018.

4. Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Blepharoplasty is performed for medical or cosmetic reasons and addresses drooping eyelids, which can impact your vision, making it difficult to read, write, or drive. This face procedure may involve removing excess skin tissue, fat, and repositioning the muscles to restore taut eyelids. There were 206, 529 eyelid surgeries performed in 2018.

5. Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

The tummy tuck is a popular procedure among women and men. The full tummy tuck removes excess skin tissue and fat deposits from the upper and lower abdomen while also repositioning abdominal muscles that have stretched due to pregnancy or significant weight gain. The mini-abdominoplasty addresses excess skin tissue in the lower abdomen below the belly button. This body procedure is often combined with liposuction and breast surgery for a mommy makeover.

Cosmetic Surgeries We Offer

Dr. Victoria Karlinsky-Bellini is a triple board-certified surgeon who takes pride in helping men and women look and feel their best. The cosmetic surgeries we offer include:

Face Surgery

We offer the facelift procedure and minimally-invasive treatments to restore and rejuvenate the face. The facelift can address several issues and has come a long way since the “frozen look” associated with facelift results in the past. This face surgery focuses on restoring lost volume to the face, reducing deep folds, lines, and wrinkles, removing excess skin, and contouring the jowls (or double chin).

Breast Surgery

Breast augmentation is the most common cosmetic surgery in the United States. Hundreds of thousands have this breast surgery each year to increase the size and reshape the breasts using saline or silicone breast implants. Breast augmentation is often combined with a breast lift to provide the best results. We also offer breast reduction for women who struggle with large breasts and also men who have gynecomastia (enlarged male breasts).

Body Surgery

Body surgery encompasses a variety of cosmetic surgeries designed to reshape or restore an area with unwanted fat or loose, sagging skin. These procedures include:

  • Liposuction: We offer traditional liposuction as well as Lunchtime Lipo and Tickle Lipo which are less invasive fat removal methods. Liposuction can remove unwanted fat cells from many areas from the neck and chin to the calves. The removed fat cells are gone for good, but you can still gain weight in other areas. Lipo is not a weight loss solution nor does it address cellulite.
  • Body Contouring: Body contouring includes the thigh lift, arm lift, body lift, and the Brazilian Butt Lift. These procedures remove excess skin and residual fat to reposition and reshape troublesome areas. The Brazilian Butt Lift is a unique procedure as it uses fat transferred from another area of your body to increase the size and contour the buttocks.
  • Tummy Tuck: We offer the full abdominoplasty and the mini tummy tuck. The tummy tuck addresses loose abdominal muscles and excess skin tissue in the upper and lower abdomen, which is typically caused by childbearing or massive weight loss. The mini-abdominoplasty focuses on the lower abdomen beneath the belly button.

These body surgeries can be performed as standalone procedures or combined to address several cosmetic concerns at once such as the “mommy makeover,” which often involves liposuction, tummy tuck, and a breast surgery such as breast augmentation or breast lift.
