Hymenoplasty in Westchester, NY

Restoring the hymen—a thin membrane that protects the vagina—is done with a surgical procedure called a hymenoplasty. The hymen can be torn by a number of means, including exercise, tampon insertion, and sexual penetration. The hymen is significant in many cultures, as it is considered a sign of virginity. In some religions and cultures, proof of an intact hymen is a requirement for marriage. So there can be serious practical and psychological reasons why a woman may want to undergo hymen reconstruction.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Hymenoplasty?

Typically, hymenoplasty candidates are women who have torn their hymen but want or need it to be intact for religious, cultural, or psychological reasons. In addition, candidates for the procedure should be in good general health, be non-smokers, and be mature enough to understand the risks of the procedure.

Women who have given birth are not good candidates for hymenoplasty.

How Is Hymenoplasty Performed?

Any surgical procedure will begin with a preparatory consultation between the surgeon and the patient. This will include a physical exam and the taking of a complete medical history. The hymenoplasty operation only takes an hour to complete under sedation or a general anesthetic.

During the operation, tissue is taken from the patient’s vaginal wall and used to repair or rebuild the membrane of the hymen. Sutures will allow this membrane to heal and the tissue to re-grow, restoring the hymen to the original state. At the same time, the vaginal opening may be tightened.

What Can I Expect From My Hymenoplasty Recovery?

Full recovery from this procedure will take at least six weeks. During this time, several things should be avoided, including strenuous exercise and any kind of penetration; however, most women find they can return to work and a schedule of light exercise within a day or two.

Pain, swelling, and bruising should be minimal, but your surgeon will likely prescribe a painkiller just in case.

What Results Can I Expect From Hymenoplasty?

Once healed, women who undergo hymenoplasty will have an intact hymen, similar to the one they were born with. It will tear and bleed when penetrated or ruptured. It should be noted that it does restore virginity, but it does restore the physical state associated with virginity. And this can help the patient come to terms with her sense of self and some sensitive cultural requirements.
